About Bizfestwhat to expect...

Bizfest was born out of a desire to connect the community together and create a catalyst-event pushing the business community towards innovation, growth and development. By loosening some of the constructs we find in today’s business world, we can push our creativity a little further towards innovation; together exploring new tools and strategies to find success. Our goal, which in turn is our core belief, is that an active and innovative business community leads to a healthy, growing city.

TM BDC Small Business Week is a trademark of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC).

It starts with breakfast and a presentation by Bruce Firestone, Founder of the Ottawa Senators, who shares his secret to success. A number of breakout sessions will then be available, all designed to guide you to sustainability through the changing economy. The afternoon is full of fun and creativity with a 'Beyond the Box Workshop' that will provide you with real life tools to ensure you get the most out of your employees in all situations. The day concludes with a reception and keynote presentation by Greg Weatherdon; Experienced Business Consultant, who reminds us why we got into business in the first place and how not to loose sight of the ‘real’ goal.

Speakers Learn from the Pros through their stories.

Bruce Firestone

Real Estate & Former Sports Team Owner

Bruce got his start in his 20s with just $10,000 for a down payment and a lot of guts when he invested in a faltering business that he turned into a commercial real estate empire; this would become the foundation for a successful bid to bring the National Hockey League back to Ottawa after a nearly 60-year hiatus. He put it all on the line, risking tens of millions of dollars, to bring the Senators back to Ottawa.

A popular speaker to audiences of business people, students, business improvement associations, chambers of commerce and economic development agencies, Bruce has great stories to tell and lessons learned about perseverance and vision to impart that will inspire. Bruce talks about how it doesn't take many entrepreneurs to change a city or town and how bootstrapped entrepreneurs are an important part of shaping a sustainable future for communities across the planet.

Bob Presner

President of Beyond the Box

Coming from the creative world of film and television. As former president of Film Finances Canada and vice-president of Motion Picture Guarantors, he was involved in more than 500 projects: feature films, MOWs, TV series, and documentaries including films directed by Tony Scott, David Cronenberg, Deepa Mehta, Robert Lepage and Atom Egoyan.

A frequent guest lecturer at the Canadian Film Centre, Ryerson University, Sheridan College and George Brown College, Bob taught a Masters Course at the University of Miami and is a founding member of the Quebec Chapter of the Directors Guild of Canada.
